The ABC’s of My First Semester at Elon University

Dear feisty felines,

My first semester of college is OVER. How did that already happen? Woo, time flies when you're having fun.

Today, while I was traveling on the Amtrak train to NJ to see one of my best friends Jordan, I decided to compose a list of 26 reasons I loved this semester of college. I also wanted to add a twist - each reason starts with a different letter of the alphabet! I had fun writing this & I hope you enjoy it!

Acorn - If you go to Elon, you know the magic that is Acorn. Whether it is their delicious cookies or their fantastic made-to-order sandwiches, Acorn is one of my favorite places in the world. The people that work there are so sweet, and it’s even more cool because they are open till 1 AM!!! There were many nights that I would encourage myself to get my work done early so I could grab a carnival cookie before bed. Seriously, ACORN IS BAE.

Blogging - starting this website on September 1st of this year was one of the best things I’ve ever done. Finally having a place that I own & mold with my creativity has been a dream come true. The fact that people are reading it also makes me extremely happy! Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.

Coffee - I love coffee as you know, and I am soooooo glad that Elon has such wonderful places to get local coffee. Both Irazu and Oak House are absolutely wonderful. I spent many hours in those places “studying”… aka scrolling through Twitter. ;)

Dining Halls - The dining halls …. oh, I can already hear the mixed reviews. I personally loved them. I loved the fact that there were so many options for food. I loved Lakeside for weekend brunch, I loved Green World for when I wanted something vegetarian, and I loved McEwen for those DUMPLINGS (they were heavenly).

Edge Magazine - It was so awesome to work with such cool and talented people at The Edge Magazine, Elon’s fashion & lifestyle magazine! It was so much fun to help Maggie & Lindsey jumpstart their social media and promote the amazing content the editors there are making.

Fellows Program - The Communications Fellows program was one of the reasons that I came to Elon. I wanted an opportunity to work with other students that knew what they wanted to do and wanted to get started right away. I’ve been able to meet such talented people with different interests within communications & I can’t wait to work with them for the next four years.

Georgia - I got the opportunity to go to Atlanta, Georgia with the Communications Fellows Programs and visit different media organizations. It was so cool because it was my first time going to Georgia or Atlanta, and I finally got the opportunity to see a PR firm up close and personal. After visiting that, I knew I wanted to go into some field regarding strategic communications.

Hook Hall - Hook Hall is where I live on campus at Elon University, and I love it! I love how close it is to everything, and I’ve made some of my closest friends in the walls of that building. Late night talks, bonding over Chinese food, and more. If I went through and named everyone, I’d be babbling forever, but Hook 201, Hook 202, and Hook 302 - thanks for being my Hook family <3

Interviews - For many, interviews are a stressful experience, and don’t get me wrong, they are certainly stressful for myself as well. However, I like interviews because that means there is an opportunity approaching to do something really cool. I was fortunately able to interview for a few different things this semester, which was scary but also so cool! I’ve been able to get so involved this semester in the Communications world of Elon, and I’ve loved every moment.

Judaism- Now, without explanation, this would look weird. Basically, through my years through a private Christian school, I didn’t mean that many Jewish people. However, after coming to Elon, I met SO MANY Jewish people. It was so awesome to learn about this new culture and what it meant to so many different people. Definitely something awesome I wasn’t expecting to get from college.

Keeping Busy - Many days of the semester have consisted of me waking up at 7:30, leaving my dorm, and not coming back until midnight. Honestly, that’s how I like it because I’m staying active and working on myself :)

Late Night - Late Night is one of the most wonderful things. Between 11 and 3 am on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, some of the employees at the dining halls stay and make food for students whether they are studying late or out on the town. The people there are so sweet and so patient, and I hate to see when people are so rude to them. They are taking time out of their lives to give us food. Anyway, tater tots are pretty darn amazing at 1 am.

Music (Acapella) - At the beginning of the semester, I auditioned for the acapella groups at Elon. Unfortunately, I didn’t even get a callback. Now, at first I was upset, but then I realized…. I wasn’t meant to do that. Instead, I was supposed tobe focusing on things in the Communications world. With that in mind, this rejection really helped me and drove me to work hard to get involved in The Pendulum and the communications school. Also, I went to almost every acapella group’s concert - THEY ARE ALL SO TALENTED.

Nicknames - Another weird one…. recently, people call me “feisty” or “feistyfletch” instead of Fletcher, and for some odd reason, it makes me really happy. Being able to hear audibly that my efforts to create a personality online are working is very rewarding. Keep it up :)

Open classrooms - This is something that people aren’t taking advantage of!! So, instead of traveling to the library, which I think is a really stressful environment to study… I go to empty classroom! Students can swipe into any academic building until midnight, so I just go into an empty classroom and I’m able to lay out my work, use the board, and study in peace. This is definitely something I recommend for anyone at a school that allows this.

Pendulum - The Pendulum is Elon’ student newspaper that I decided to apply to work at just because I thought it looked interesting. Little did I know that I would become a Public Relations Rep and meet some of the coolest people I ever have. The people at the Pendulum are so cool and so talented, and they are such a hardworking news organization. I’m so excited that I will be working for them as a Social Media Manager in the coming year.

Questions Answered- I finally got so many questions answered that I’ve been so curious about. These include questions regarding my major, my potential career, social stuff, history, etc. I’ve learned more than I ever thought I could in this one short semester.

Reading- One of the downers of college…. SO MUCH READING for class.

Spectrum- This is the queer-straight alliance on Elon’s campus, and I’m so glad to have it as a resource! I met amazing people there with different backgrounds, and I’ve had dynamic discussions about several topics regarding LGBTQIA+ life.

Television - This wasn’t something that I expected I’d get myself into, but I’ve been fortunate to have been on 2 television shows! The first was Love It Or Hate It, which is the Edge Magazine’s fantastic little talk show. However, the audio on my episode got defected or something, so it won’t ever be uploaded :/ However, I should be filming a new episode shortly! The other TV show that I was fortunate enough to be on was E-Talk, Elon’s entertainment television show. When I was on there, I was interviewed and asked questions all about my blog and creating an online presence online. It was such an honor to be able to talk about my passion somewhere like that. My episode is actually the one that they are sending to the Collegiate Emmys for potential awards - NO PRESSURE!

Uniting with my passion- I've never been this happy in my entire life. I get to do what I love every day with amazing people. :)

Videomaking - Youtube and video has always been something that I thought was really cool and all, but I didn’t to ever get myself into. However, using Elon’s fantastic video making resources like cameras and editing suites, I was able to make 3 Youtube videos. And frankly, I can’t wait to make more! It’s so much fun to blab for a really long time and then cut it down to something watchable. It’s definitely one of my favorite types of content to create. Thank you so much for watching my silly videos.

Watching American Horror Story - This is something that I would never do!! Austin, my roommate, and some other friends, wanted to re-watch the series, and I decided to join. I thought that I wouldn’t be able to handle it, but I actually ended up LOVING IT. Such a cool series. (No spoilers - I haven’t watched the new season yet, hehe)

X-citing times with friends and a dash of spontaneity - Enough said. :)

You- If you are reading this, you made my semester wonderful! The fact that people are reading this blog and are actually interested in the weird stuff I have to say BLOWS MY MIND. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I try my best to put my heart and soul in this for you because I know you all have busy lives. Seriously, thank you for going on this journey with me.

Zero Regrets - I’ve had ups and downs this semester. I’ve had days of anxiety and days where I screwed up or didn’t think things through. However, I’ve grown so much through this semester. I’d say I’m a totally different person from who I was before stepping on Elon’s campus. I’ve tried so many new things, met so many new people, and even taken out things out of my life that were bringing me down. I have no regrets from this semester because it’s exactly what I needed to realize where I am headed :)

I had such an amazing first semester & I can't wait to see what's next in store for me!

Love y'all! Good luck on finals if you still have them! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
